AYRTON SENNA (March 1960 – May 1994)

Ayrton Senna da Silva was a Brasilian race driver who won the Formula 1 world championship title three times. His tragic death in 1994 is still mourned by brasilians and he remains one of the most beloved Formula 1 personalities.

Born in São Paulo, Senna got his first kart at the age of four. When he was 13, he started kart competitions and he became kart Champion four years later. His driving talents didn’t go unnoticed, and he enjoyed a steady rise in his career.

When he joined the McLaren team, Alain Prost was his teammate. The competition between the two culminated in a number of dramatic accidents.

On the track, Senna showed extreme determination, precision, and discipline (resulting in a record poles). In the wet, Senna was unchallenged, and in 1993 at the European GP, he demonstrated exceptional wet driving skills at the wheel of an inferior car.

On may 1, he took part in his third race for the Williams-Renaut team, the San Marino GP. Senna would never finished the race. He went off the track in the Tamburello curve and did not survive the injuries caused by the head-on collision with a concrete wall. He was 34.

His death was considered by many of his brasilian fans to be a national tragedy. Senna is buried at the Morumbi cemetery in São Paulo, his hometown. After his death his family created the Ayrton Senna Foudaton, an organization with the aim of helpinh poor people in Brasil and all over the world. He continues to impact the world today because he was a so compassionate and religious man.
