The group, consisting of Brian May (guitar and vocals), Freddie Mercury (vocals and piano), John Deacon (bass) and Roger Taylor (drums and vocals) is often a British rock band, founded in the mid-1970s. Quoted as one of the exponents of his style, also being one of the records of record sales worldwide. The band's music is also known to be highly eclectic, ranging from various rock strands.
Originally, the Queen band emerged from Smile, band formed by Brian May, Roger Taylor and the bass player Tim Staffell. With the end of this set, Freddie Mercury and John Deacon, along with May and Roger, established the formation of a new group in the mid-1970s. Their first two albums achieved little success until they became internationally known through albums Sheer Heart Attack and most notably A Night at the Opera, whose singles "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "You're My Best Friend" achieved good performances. Later, the quartet's popularity spread to News of the World in 1977 due to hits "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" as well as "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Another One Bites the Dust "from the acclaimed 1980 The Game.
During the 1980s, Queen began to adopt synthesizers in their songs, and despite some successes such as "Under Pressure", the band received strong criticism from the specialized media, lost much of its popularity in North American territory and went through Crises, even while maintaining their training. On the other hand, the album The Works contained the singles "Radio Ga Ga" and "I Want to Break Free", that reached great notoriety in the United Kingdom and in countries of South America, like Brazil and Argentina. In 1985, the group performed one of their most memorable performances at the Live Aid event. Years later, vocalist Freddie Mercury contracted the AIDS virus, and after the release of The Miracle and Innuendo, the artist died at age 45 . In 1995, the last unreleased work of the quartet, Made in Heaven, was released, and bassist John Deacon retired from the musical world.
In the following years, Brian May and Roger Taylor followed solo careers, playing with several invited musicians. Among them were Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert, with whom they formed respectively Queen + Paul Rodgers and Queen + Adam Lambert. The band has sold more than three hundred million records worldwide, releasing fifteen unpublished albums, several compilations and video works. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and won a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.
