Manaus was founded in 1848, with 4,000 inhabitants. Starting in 1880 with the growth of
the international demand for rubber, Manaus became the most important marketing center in the
western Amazon. But the rubber economy collapsed as national production fell 50% in 1910 and
dropped to 5% in 1929. In 1967, a law converted Manaus into a free port (ZFM) and later some
special incentives were established.
Following establishment of the ZFM the population of the city increased from 245.000
inhabitants in 1967 to almost a million today.
As the city continues to grow without urban planning, public services such as rubbish
collection, water and electricity have falled badly to follow the same progress.
