One of the most successful TV programmes of
recent years is the Are You Able7 series. It was
originally a British idea but was first broadcast in
the USA m 2005. 1
The programme is similar in
all countries People apply to
be on the programme and
about 100 are chosen They
then appear in front a judge
who deddes if they should
go on to the next round or
not. The judge is different for
each person. If the person
is a singer, for example,
the judge is a singer. If the
person is a comedian, the
judge is a comedian. There
are more rounds and the
performers have to do a
different act each time and
the judges are also different.
In the semi-final, it is the audience who decide
who should go through to the final. 2
Some of the winners have been interesting. In
Austria, the first winner was a ten-year-old boy.
He did magic tricks. The first winner from the
Ukraine was an artist who painted 3D pictures
on the floor. The first winners from Germany
were stuntmen and the first winner from Estonia
played music on his knees! However, none of
these have become as famous or as talked about
as a 2009 contestant from Britain. 31
Karen Stone was 55 when she entered the show.
In 1999, she had spent all her savings to record
some jokes on a CD. These she sent to TV
channels, radio stations and talent competitions.
She won some local competitions and was then
chosen for the 2009 series of Are You Able?
When she first appeared on the show, the
reaction was immediate. People couldn't believe
that such a 'normal-looking middle-aged woman
could be so funny. In seventy-two hours, two
million people had watched a video clip of her
performance on the Internet. She got through
to the final and everyone thought she would win
easily. 4 Losing didn't stop Karen's success,
though. In November 2009, she made her first
CD album, Here's a funny story. In the USA it
sold 500,000 copies in a week. By the end of
the year it had become the best selling CD in​
