Read the text below to answer questions A and B. Use the dictionary if necessary.

Are animal species safe in tropical rainforests? The forces of destruction such as logging, cattle ranching and overpopulation all contribute to the loss of millions of acres of tropical rainforest. Both animals and forest people lose their homes when man cuts down trees. Animals don't receive any warning to move they have no time to pack their bags - and most die when the forest is destroyed. About 35 species become extinct every day in the world's tropical rainforests.

Many large mammals such as leopards and apes need miles and miles of territory to move about and have difficulty to survive in the smaller and fragmented habitats they are forced into because of human destruction of their natural homes.

The cutting down of trees is not the only reason for species extinction. Poachers trade thousands of monkeys and other primates illegally on the international market each year. People buy them for their fur, as pets, or for scientific research. Parrots and macaws are also popular pets nowadays; buyers pay up to US$10,000 for one bird. Even the jaguar is in danger of becoming extinct. People pay a lot of money to have a coat or shoes made of its fur.
