Malala Yousafzal was born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. In 2009, at the age of 11, Malala confronted the Taliban as she started to speak up for girls' rights to education. When traveling home from school, in October 2012, she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman, but she survived and never stopped campaigning for girls education. Malala received support and encouragement in her activism from her parents. In 2013, she published her memoir, entitled I Am Malala. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, becoming the youngest person to get it.
