Patricia in Canada.

Patricia’s family is very curious about how she is doing in Canada. Her family received a voice

message from her telling them everything in detail. Now, her mother is very happy to know that

she is all right at the Redwoods’. Her mother is talking to a friend telling the good news. She says

that Patricia thinks the Redwoods are nice people and that they try to help her a lot with her

English and witheverything she needs.

Patricia’s English was very poor when she arrived in Canada, but now she can speak and write

English much better. Patricia’s mother goes on saying that her daughter is very enthusiastic about

her daily routine: she gets up at seven o’clock because her school starts at nine a.m. She doesn’t

complain about waking up earlier than in Brazil because she has a lot of time to get dressed and

enjoy her breakfast. Patricia’s mother tells her friend that breakfast in Canada is different from

Brazil; it is a very important meal, so she has a big breakfast: two or more toasts, eggs, apple

juice, milk, cereal etc.

Patricia’s mother says that at half past eight the girl walks to the bus stop and catches the bus to

school at a quarter to nine. Patricia loves her school. It is near the Redwoods’ apartment, about

five minutes by bus. The mother goes on saying that another thing Patricia told her is that there are only twenty students in her class and they are all from different countries. She likes it a lot

because she can meet people from all over the world and learn about different cultures. She says:

“Isn’t it fantastic? By the way, her best friend is Mexican. Her name is Tereza. Sometimes they try

to communicate in Spanish. She doesn’t know Spanish but she can understand a little. Her

Mexican friend can’t understand Portuguese at all. She says it is very difficult, so they always

speak English”. Patricia’s mother keeps talking about her daughter’s experience abroad. She says

Patricia has classes from nine to eleven and then they have a twenty-minute break. At one o’clock

they have lunch – it’s usually a sandwich, some fruit and juice. After lunch, they have special

activities, such as visits to museums and art galleries, picnics and sports. She comes back from

school at six o’clock. She has dinner at half past seven and she goes to bed at half past nine.

Patty’s mother ends by saying Patricia has a very busy day but she says her daughter has a lot of

fun too. This weekend Patricia and her host family are going to Ottawa, Canada’s capital. She is

very excited.

That is what mothers are like: they love talking about their kids and their new experiences!
