My grandfather, Pierre, (1) _________ (be) born in France in 1922. He (2) _________
(grow) up in the countryside. He (3) _________ (leave) France in 1939, and came to
Britain. He (4) _________ (know) just one word in English: ‘Hello’. At first, he (5)
_________ (not feel) very happy – he was lonely. But he (6) _________ (speak) to
everyone he met and he soon (7) _________ (make) friends easily. He learnt English
well and now he speaks it perfectly.

The verbs in the past simple tense:

My grandfather, Pierre, was born in France in 1922. He grew up up in the countryside. He left France in 1939, and came to Britain. He knew just one word in English: ‘Hello’. At first, he didn't felt very happy - he was lonely. But he spoke to everyone he met and he soon made friends easily. He learnt English well and now he speaks it perfectly.

Formação do simple past

A forma essencial do Simple Past encontra-se no uso do auxiliar did em ambas formas negativa e interrogativa. Também há o acréscimo dos sufixos ed, ied ou d ao final do verbo principal. A exemplo disso:

  • She danced (Ela dançou)
  • He married (Ele casou)

Há também os verbos irregulares, que não seguem a fórmula, a exemplo:

  • Build - built
  • Choose - chose
  • Drink - drank
  • Do - did
  • Drive - drove
