Elizabeth Clegg – Athletics

Hometown: Deepdale, Scottish Borders

Achievements: Won a silver medal at the IPC Athletics World Championships. Would have won a second silver had Elizabeth not been disqualified because her guide runner (who has not been with her long) not crossed the line before her. Ranked in the top three in the world as a senior in two events in 2006, aged just 16.


When did you start?

Elizabeth (Libby): I've been running since I was about nine and a half. I first started because I was getting badly bullied at school. I found running was an easy way to relieve stress and tension. It made me feel better about myself.
What's your training like?

Elizabeth: I find it very difficult to fit my schoolwork around training and my training around my schoolwork because I don't really have a lot of time to myself so I have to manage my time. But I'm still not very good at that and my homework is normally in late.
I run with a guide runner, called Lincoln. He runs with me because I'm registered legally blind. He works me really hard and keeps me on track.
We run with a tie that keeps us together. It keeps us 5cm apart.

What's your career highlight so far?

Elizabeth: In the World Championships I came second in the 200m and broke my personal bests in the heats, semi-final and final. So I was really, really pleased with that and surprised a lot of people.
In the 100m I would have come second but my guide runner's chest went in front of me so I was disqualified.

What's your advice for people who want to get into the sport?

Elizabeth: I really love running, and I think if you really believe in something and if you've got an ambition you should just go for it.
