With 5 swine flu cases, a city in India hits panic button
With five people testing positive for swine flu in the city, even mild fever, cough and cold have become a cause of panic among the city of Ludhiana residents. According to doctors, with the sudden change in temperatures in the past few weeks, patients with viral fever are flooding clinics with everyone wanting to be tested for swine flu.
Pediatric outpatient departments are the busiest, says Dr. Baldeep Singh of Deep Hospital. “More than 80 kids come each day with fever, cold, cough. Educated residents also ask about a swine flu test. The test costs a lot for the government, so only patients whose symptoms are actually of swine flu are referred for tests.”
Doctors need to examine patients carefully before referring them for a swine flu test, said district epidemiologist Dr. Anil Verma.
He added that everyone needs to take good care of their health by regularly washing hands before eating and maintaining a distance from a person with cough and cold. “Such simple precautions will help control the disease.”
Among th e common symptoms of swine flu are cough, sore throat, runny nose, difficulty in breathing, body ache, headache, diarrhea, vomiting and blood in sputum.
