For geralmente é utilizado para datas indeterminadas...
Since é o contrário, nós usamos ele quando falamos de uma data específica, como: 1998, 2005, last week, last sunday, yesterday...
1) I have known her for a long time. [é utilizado for pois não é mencionado uma data específica, long time = muito tempo]
2) My dad has worked in the company since 1999. [data específica: o ano de 1999]
3) He hasn't seen in family since last year. [data específica: ano passado]
4) My boyfriends hasn't called me for 2 days. [a frase menciona apenas a quantidade de dias, e não quais dias]
5) I haven't failed a test for years. [tradução: eu não tenho falhado em um teste em anos]
