Quarter of young people feel they do not belong in Britain.
Clement Owusu an 18-year-old from Kensal Rise in north London, believes his generation is more open and
more “accepting” toward people from other countries than older generations. He said his parents moved from
Ghana to Italy where he was born. “I lived in Italy until I was 12, but I moved over here with my parents after
that. I have been here since 2011,” he said. “In terms of school support, I have had a lot of support from my
school here. When I came here I thought the culture would be about the Queen and drinking tea, but I don’t
think anyone cares about that. “There are so many different cultures here that I don’t think many of us feel like
we belong to this place or that place. I don’t think I do belong here especially. “Since the Brexit vote I feel there
has been more racism, particularly towards people from Eastern Europe, and I can empathize with them. “I
come from Europe and feel like I belong there more than I do here. I think they are more accepting than people
are here. It is the same for a lot of people in my generation. “The younger generation is more accepting; our
generation is comfortable with other cultures. It is the older generation that doesn’t change, and who are less
accepting of those from different cultures.”
