Explicação:

Was, Were, Is, Are significam SER OU ESTAR.

Was e Were é o passado de IS e ARE ( verbo TO BE), porém são usados de diferentes maneiras:

I AM

YOU ARE

SHE IS

HE IS

IT IS

WE ARE

YOU ARE

THEY ARE

O IS é usado para os singulares

EXEMPLO:  SHE IS: Ela é/ está

O ARE é usado para os plurais

EXEMPLO: WE ARE: Nós somos/ estamos

I WAS

YOU WERE

HE WAS

SHE WAS

IT WAS

WE WERE

YOU WERE

THEY WERE

O WAS é usado para os singulares

exemplo:  HE WAS: Ele era/estava

O WERE é usado para os plurais

exemplo: WE WERE: Nós eramos/ estavamos

LEMBRANDO: O WAS E WERE SÃO USADOS NO PASSADO E O IS E ARE SÃO USADOS NO PRESENTE!
