a) In order to explain language variation, it would help to use a metaphor. Think of the ocean. It is deep, it can be stormy and, above all, it is very, very big. The beaches, on the other hand, are often small and cozy.

 

Such is the case for local language variations. English as an idiom is as vast as an ocean. Variations are smaller versions, and they are the places where people live and play.

 

b) For those of us who like to watch movies and to read comic books, there are a few English variations very easy to find:

• Slang is the particular variation of young people or local groups. An example is the word “dude”, meaning “guy”. Or “tube” meaning “subway”.
   
• The jargon is a professional variation. Sometimes it is borrowed by other groups. Gamers often use military jargon. They can say a friend is “awol”, meaning absent from his expected place, or even “M.I.A.”, meaning lost and not found.
   
• There are also local variations. These can be very funny and colorful. A good example is the use of “me” instead of “my” on Ireland and parts of England. In this case, a local speaker will not say “my life”, but “me life”.
