Bolsonaro says he will name Sergio Moro for the STF
President Jair Bolsonaro said on Sunday morning that he would appoint Minister Sergio Moro for the next vacancy of the Federal Supreme Court. The statement was made in an interview with journalist Milton Neves, of Radio Bandeirantes.
"I made a commitment to Moro, he gave up 22 years of magistracy," the president said. "I said: 'the first vacancy to open there is at your disposal'. A person of the qualification he has, I think it would be done in there. "
To be nominated, Moro would have to enter the vacancy of a court minister to retire. The law requires that the members of the Supreme leave the position after turning 75 years. The next to comply with the rule is Celso de Mello, named still in the Sarney government, in 1989.
The president, however, stated that Moro would need to have the Senate endorsement to fill the post and that he would not be an ally of the government in the Court. "Obviously he has to go through a technical-political sabatina to do so, but he does not lack competence," he praised. "I will honor this commitment, I am sure he would be a great ally, not the government, but the interests of Brazil."
