From the mid-eighteenth century, with the Industrial Revolution, air pollution increased greatly. The burning of coal brought tons of pollutants into the atmosphere of European industrial cities. From this moment, the human being had to live with the polluted air and with all the damages coming from this "progress".

Today, almost every major city in the world suffers from the harmful effects of air pollution. Cities like Sao Paulo, Tokyo, New York and Mexico City are among the most polluted in the world.

Pollution generation - the causes and the gaseous pollutants

The pollution generated in today's cities is mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum products (gasoline and diesel). The burning of these products has released a large amount of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere. These two fuels are responsible for the generation of energy that feeds the industrial, electrical, and transportation sectors of most of the world's economies. So letting them aside today is extremely difficult.

Problems generated by pollution

This pollution has generated many problems in large urban centers. Human health, for example, is most affected by pollution. Respiratory diseases like bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, allergies and asthma take thousands of people to hospitals every year. Other health problems are: skin irritation, exaggerated tearing, eye infection, sore throat and inflammatory processes in the circulatory system (when pollutants reach circulation). On dry days with high air pollution, it is recommended to drink more water than normal, to avoid physical activities outdoors, to use a humidifier indoors (especially from 10am to 4pm) and to clean the house floor with a damp cloth.

Air pollution has also hampered ecosystems and historical and cultural heritage in general. As a result of this pollution, acid rain kills plants, animals and, with time, erodes historical monuments. Recently, the Acropolis of Athens had to undergo a process of restoration, because the millenarian construction was suffering with the pollution of the Greek capital.

The climate is also affected by air pollution. The phenomenon of the greenhouse effect is increasing the temperature on our planet. It occurs as follows: the polluting gases form a layer of pollution in the atmosphere, blocking the dissipation of heat. In this way, the heat is concentrated in the atmosphere, causing climatic changes. In the future, researchers say that we may have an increase in the water level of the oceans, causing the flooding of islands and coastal cities. Many animal species may be extinct and typhoons and tsunamis may occur more frequently.

Solutions and challenges

Despite the negative news, man has been looking for solutions to these problems. The technology has advanced in the direction to generate machines and fuels less polluting or that do not generate pollution. Many automobiles are already using natural gas as fuel. In Brazil, for example, we have millions of cars powered by alcohol, non-fossil fuel, which I polluted little. Tests with hydrogen have shown that in the very near future, cars will be able to ride with a type of fuel that only releases water vapor into the atmosphere.
