One person commits suicide every four seconds in the world, says a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO). This corresponds to 800,000 deaths per year. The data are for 2016 and the number is higher than deaths from malaria, breast cancer, war or homicide and means "a serious global public health problem," according to the organization.
Despite the large number of casualties between 2010 and 2016, the global suicide rate fell by 9.8%, but only 38 countries have preventive strategies against the problem. The only region that presented an increase (6%) of the cases was the Americas.
“Every death is a tragedy for family, friends and colleagues. Still, suicides are preventable. We urge all countries to sustainably incorporate effective suicide prevention strategies into national education and health programs, ”said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.
In absolute numbers, most suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries, but high-income countries have the highest suicide rate (11.5 per 100,000 population). Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia have suicide rates above the world average of 10.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. The Eastern Mediterranean region has the lowest rate.
