Sleeping Beauty in the Woods
Many elements in The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods indicate that the chronicle should be considered a fairytale. Charles Perrault is the French author of 'Contes du temps passé'. His book contains several fairytales, including the story we shall be discussing. Fairy Tales are short fantasies, often directed towards children; they include mystical folk, princesses, magic, and other generic conventions. Moreover, the classic story of Sleeping Beauty in the Woods follows these fairytale conventions. This essay will discuss the fairytale norms evident in this tale. The first paragraph points out the childlike magic which ensures the princesses "happily ever after". Subsequently, we will briefly examine the typical characters in the story, including; the prince/princess couple and the two evil women.

Charles Perault's story centres around magic spells. Sweet fairies are invited to the princess's banquet. An older fairy, angry that they forgot about inviting her, curses the princess to prick her finger and die of it. Thankfully the last fairy ("The good fairy") uses her powers to save the princess. The good fairy shouts: "Instead of dying, she shall merely fall into a profound slumber that will last a hundred years ... a king's son shall come to awaken her. "(Charles 1); just like that, the spell to protects the princess from dying. Alternatively, the princess will fall into a deep sleep, which will last 100 years. When the time comes, the princess falls into her profound slumber. Once more, the "good fairy" comes to establish a joyful environment. When the fairy arrives, she touches everyone in the palace with her magical wand and: "They all fell asleep, to awaken only at the same moment as their mistress." (Charles 3) The fairy's fictional powers cause the whole kingdom to fall asleep peacefully, ensuring merriment and denying heavy realities. This good fairy made everyone rest with the princess; this way, she will awake to find her loved ones still alive. Naive magic like the one used by the fairy is mainly seen in children's stories, particularly fairytales.

The prince and princess resemble a stereotypical couple. The princess acts as the "damsel in distress" while the prince behaves heroically. At the princesses banquet, she is gifted by the fairies "The youngest [fairy] ordained that she should be the most beautiful person in the world." (Charles 1)Perault focuses mainly on the princesses' exterior rather than her intellect. The subject of women and their beauty seen as an indicator of virtue is common amongst fairytales. After marrying the prince, the princess mother-in-law attempts to eat her. She fails, however, as a steward tricks her. Long story short, the mother's fury led her into creating a vat for the princess and her children. Our helpless damsel stays in need of her charming prince. The story describes the scene of the princess being rescued, explaining: "There they were, and her minions were making ready to cast them into the vat when into the courtyard rode the king!" immediately, the king saves the queen from his evil mother. This scene illustrates a hero(the prince)rescuing his damsel in distress(the princess). Typically, lovers in fairytales display the same misogynistic trope, where the princess is dependent on her prince charming.

Notice, there is apparent folk in "Sleeping Beauty in the woods". It features fairies, dwarfs and an ogress. In Charles Perault's story, mythical creatures can be almost immediately classified as good or evil. For instance, the old fairy cast a spell declaring, "the princess should prick her hand with a spindle, and die of it." (Charles 1) Readers judge her evil spell as corrupt; being uninvited should not lead to such wrath. Aged women are commonly villains in fairy tales(Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Hazel & Grettel). The second older woman seen in the fairy tale also proves herself evil. A middle-aged orgess, the prince's mother, summoned the steward and gave an order. "For my dinner tomorrow," she told him, "I will eat little Dawn[Her grandchild]." (Charles 5). The prince's mother shows her nastiness by almost devouring her son's family; these cannibalistic traits serve as a great representation of her race. From the start, it is easy to identify the evil characters in this story as they are two older women with wicked looks.
