Oprah was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954. Her mother was a single teenager, so she lived on her grandparents’ farm for several years. At age six, Oprah went to live with her mother, who was working as a housemaid. Unfortunately, she faced abuse in that time.
She moved to Nashville, Tennessee at age 14 to live with her father. Oprah won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant at age 17 and got a job working as a radio announcer from it. She also received a full scholarship to Tennessee State University.
Soon Oprah left school to become a local news anchor. Her career had begun! She moved to Baltimore in 1976 and started working at a daily talk show called People Are Talking. She then moved to Chicago for the show AM Chicago, which later became The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Later Life and Career Success
The Oprah Winfrey Show has been successful from the beginning, winning three Emmys the first year it was eligible. Oprah was also the youngest woman to receive the “Broadcaster of the Year” Award.
She acted in The Color Purple and was nominated for an Oscar in 1985. She produced the movie Their Eyes Were Watching God and acted in Bee Movie, Charlotte’s Web, and The Princess and the Frog.
With the success of The Oprah Winfrey Show, she became the first black woman billionaire in history. She has a fortune totaling around 2.9 billion dollars, making her one of the wealthiest women alive.
Time magazine named Oprah as one of the “100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century”. She has also received a Lifetime Achievement Award and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Wow!

Oprah created her own magazines and production company, has given away millions of dollars to various charities, and helped to fund schools in developing countries.
