Will Tourists Kill Tourism?



Human beings in the post-war twentieth century are travelling internationally and every year more of us are becoming tourists. Today, tourism is a major industry in many countries and many people depend on it for jobs. As a result, tomorrow there will be more tourists, and more tour guides, more hotels, more restaurants, more gift shops, more buses, more taxis, airplanes and cars to serve them.

But what about the great sights the tourists come to see, such as Michelangelo’s ceiling in the Sistine Chapel in Rome - painted by him over four hundred years ago. It is disappearing because of the breath and the perspiration of tourists. The Taj Mahal in India, a monument to a Mogul emperor’s beloved wife and built for her in 1648, is slowly vanishing because of the pollution caused by the tourists who want to see it. There are so many tourists’ feet that the paths in some of America’s national parks and in Europe’s mountains are disappearing too - eroded by armies of tourists. Soon it will be impossible to swim in the Mediterranean, because of pollution; already it is impossible to touch the stones of the Parthenon. Furthermore, anthropologists are worried about the future.

In the twenty-first century the multiple means of transport will enable tourists to go to many destinations. However, will the great monuments from

the past and the great beauty spots survive? Or will enthusiastic crowds of tourists kill modern tourism?
