What is independence day?

Independence Day (also known as the Fourth of July) is a federal holiday celebrated each year in the United States on July 4. It marks the day in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted by the
Continental Congress. The Declaration announced that the original thirteen colonies no longer belonged to Great Britain. Instead, they would be part of a new sovereign nation – the United States of America. The first thirteen
states were Virginia, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, New Hampshire, Georgia, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Rhode Island, and New Jersey.
Before the Declaration of Independence was signed, America was part of the British Empire. As the colonies grew, the colonists felt that the British government was treating them unfairly. They believed they were paying
too much in taxes, and that they should have more say in government.
After spending many years at odds with the British government, the Continental Congress decided independence was their only course of action.
However, it wasn’t until after the Revolutionary War that Great Britain oficially acknowledged the independence of the original thirteen colonies.
The first annual celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777.
