Pesquisa que investiga na principal obra de N. Maquiavel, chamada “O
Príncipe” - escrita em 1513 e publicada pela primeira vez em 1531 - a idéia da formação do
Estado, especialmente relacionada com a formação do “governante” (príncipe) e com as
influências históricas; e ainda, a fundação da Ciência Política moderna como conhecimento
científico. A contextualização do período histórico no qual viveu Maquiavel, especialmente
Florença, sua cidade, é decisiva para a compreensão de como foi articulada sua visão política,
especialmente os conceitos de virtù e fortuna. A importância do tema pode ser facilmente
verificada tanto pela influência, direta ou velada que exerceu na ciência política posterior,
quanto pelas reações contrárias que despertou. Nicolau Maquiavel (1469-1527), grande
filósofo político do Renascimento, é considerado o grande fundador da Teoria de Estado
moderna. Seus escritos têm, então, o caráter de fundadores e não devem ser descurados da
Teria Política Moderna, pois se constituem como clássicos do pensamento político. Nesse
sentido, a ligação de suas idéias com as demais áreas é notória. Além disso, buscando
compreender o pensamento de Maquiavel, pode-se compreender também os grandes temas
da Filosofia Política, como Estado e governo, especialmente contextualizados no quadro
histórico-político do Renascimento italiano.

ABSTRACT. Virtú and Fortuna in Machiavelli’s political thought. This study aims at
investigating the most important Machiavelli’s work The Prince- written in 1513 and first
published in 1531 - the idea of the State configuration, specially connected with the
governor’s (prince’s) configuration and with their historical influences; yet the modern
foundation of the Political Science as scientific knowledge. The historical context where
Machiavelli lived, specially Florence his town, is indispensable for the understanding of his
political thoughts, mainly of virtú and fortuna. The importance of the theme may be easily
showed by both direct and indirect unfluence, which he exerted on subsequent political
science, and other adverse reactions. Niccolò Machiavelli (1469 - 1527), a great political
philosopher of Renaissance, is considered the great founder of the Modern State Theory.
His writings have the founders’ character and should not be neglected for being such a
classic of the political knowledge. Thus, his thougts connection with the other areas should
be public. Besides searching for understanding Machiavelli’s thought, we can also explain
the great Political and Philosophical themes such as State and Government, specially
observed in the political history scenary of Renaissance in Italy.
