(Newsweek, 1998)
Most colleges and universities in the United States require
international students to take the TOEFL –or Test of English as a
Foreign Language– before they can be granted admission. Written
and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), a private,
non-profit company based in Princeton, New Jersey, the TOEFL is
designed to test your ability to understand standard North American
English. It was developed specially to help American and Canadian
schools make sure that their international applicants could follow
courses taught in English. TOEFL scores range from 200 to 667.
Since the test is a measure of proficiency and not of knowledge, no
one passes or fails a TOEFL. Instead, minimum scores are
determined by each college and university. A top-tier university
usually requires a score of 600 or better.
Computer Testing
ln all but 16 countries and territories, the test is now given in a
computer-based version (CBT). The CBT is quite different from the
paper-and-pencil version. lnstead of filling in ovals on paper,
students answer questions on the screen of their computer,
by using either a keyboard or a mouse. ln some of the reading
passages, students respond to questions by clicking on words in
the text. There is a new range of scores, too, in the computer
version – from 40 to 300.
Some parts of the exam will also be “computer-adaptive”, which
means that the computer will select questions based on your
performance, rather than giving you questions in a
prearranged sequence. If you answer many questions correctly,
you will be given more difficult questions and your score will go up.
lf you answer too many incorrectly, the computer will choose easier
questions for you and your score will go down.
