Voluntary is what is done instinctively, spontaneously, automatically, unconsciously and naturally and therefore one can choose to do it or not. However, let's talk about volunteering as a decision and a conscious choice to make.
The Bible says helping others is a very important part of life. It's expressing God's love. Jesus reinforces that the second greatest commandment, after loving God, is to love one's neighbor as oneself, and true love is expressed in deeds. He who does not help his neighbor in need does not really love him.
In addition to helping others by meeting material needs, we can also help in other ways: By being friends (some people simply need someone to talk to and be friends with); helping with tasks (making life easier for people without expecting anything in return); counseling (being ready to listen, comfort, and give advice when asked); defending (who has power or influence must defend who is being wronged).
