Mary and Tom have just finished eating. Neither of them has spoken for a
while. Mary is wondering why Tom ate all of his chips before eating his burrito. In
fact, every time they go out to dinner, Tom eats everything on his plate by itself.
She couldn't understand this, although she didn't want to ask why he did it that
way either. Even though Tom did seem strange, there was something about his
strangeness that she couldn't live without. Tom is also deep in thought. Mary
thinks he is probably trying to see his reflection in the salt shaker when he looks
up into her eyes and asks, "Will you marry me?"
I have only known you for two weeks! Mary replies. "No, I will not marry you."
"But you didn't even think about it!" Tom exclaims. "How can you say no without
thinking about it? Do you want to marry someone else? Have you already met
him? I feel a terrible pain within me." "Oh, it's probably indigestion," Mary says.
"Yeah," replies Tom. "I did just eat a very big burrito." "Yes," Mary says, "and all of those chips, too."
