Organisms that belong to Kingdom Archaebacteria are unicellular prokaryotes. They are
classified according to their habitat or extreme environment they live in. Halophiles live in salty

and hydrogen, can survive only in oxygen-free environments, such as swamps and waste
treatment ponds. Thermophiles live in hot springs and volcanoes. The scientific names of
some archaeans give a clue to the extreme environment in which they live.

peptidoglycan in their cell walls. They are known as the true bacteria. They can be classified
according to their shape. Cocci are spherical, bacilli are rod-shaped, and spirilla are spiral or
cork screw-shaped. The scientific names of some bacteria give a clue to their shape.
