Cinema: the seventh art (Cinema: a sétima arte )
The word cinema is the abbreviation for cinematograph, a machine similar to a camera that records and reproduces movements. The word cinematograph comes from French, but derives from the Greek words kīnēma (movement) and graphē (graph). According to movie critic Ricciotto Canudo, cinema is the seventh art because it combines elements from six ancient arts.
