In the popular science-fiction movie 2001, a computer named Hal behaves like a human being. He, or rather it, speaks English, thinks by itself, and plays a good game of chess.
Trouble begins when the computer develops a will of its own and no longer wants to follow the instructions. Its programmers suggest that Hal be unplugged. Because the computer understands English, the programmers must whisper when speaking about Hal. But the computer, it turns out, is aware of the programmers' intentions because it is able to read their lips!
At the end of the movie, the computer still refuses to cooperate with the programmers and has to be disconected, even though its functions are essential to the spaceship it controls.
