Martin Luther King
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. Georgia and other
southern states of the United States had been slow to give equal rights to African-Americans as well
as poor whites and King wanted a change.
When he became a minister in 1954, he began a long road of leadership using nonviolent methods.
Many people joined his movement, and in 1963 he had a huge gathering of people to Washington D
C, to protest unfair government. Because of his efforts many rights were assured to all races.
At 35 years of age, Martin Luther King Jr. was the youngest man to ever receive a Nobel peace prize.
He was awarded the prize in 1964 for helping Americans change unfair laws against African-
American people. However, not everybody accepted his ideas. On April 4, 1968, at age 39, he was
killed by an assassin's bullet
Today, Dr. King's birthday is a holiday in the United States and is celebrated in honor of his struggle
for democracy
