The site may feel not a bit like Rio de Janeiro, but the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts is betting that New Yorkers need a little samba this winter.
The arts council is sponsoring its !rst Brazilian-style Carnaval this week at the Flushing Town Hall, with the rhythms of merengue and samba supplied by Nego Gato. The band’s eponymous leader, Black Cat, will demonstrate capoeira, a Brazilian form of martial arts, and the dances maculele, puxada de rede, afoxe, merengue and samba reggae. “We’re reaching out with this event”, Betsy Enright, development director of the arts council, said. “Both Corona and Astoria have sizable Brazilian audiences.”
For $35, one gets music, dance lessons, demonstrations, masks, streamers and a batida, a rum and passion-fruit concoction; with $2.50 to $6 more comes feijoada (black beans and sausage) and dessert. Brazilian beer is also available. Proceeds will help SUPPORT the council’ s Thursday-night
jazz series.
