This is an interview with Dr. Leanne Allright, a nutritionist from Manchester
Q: People talk a lot about junk food. How would you define junk food?
A: Junk food is slang word for foods which are high is salt, sugar, fat or calories, and low in nutrient content.
Q: Could you give an example of junk food?
A: Candy, chocolate, most sweet desserts, potato chips, hamburgers, pizza, popcorn, carbonated beverages, and so on. They offer a little in terms of proteins, vitamins or minerals, and a lot in terms of calories from sugar or fat.
Q: What would you do if I am crazy about snack foods?
A: The trick is to eat them in small portions. But you should eat smart food, too.
Q: And what is that?
A: Foods that contain a lot of vitamins, proteins, vitamins or minerals, like fish, milk and yogurt, and foods that are rich in fiber.
Q: What is fiber?
A: Fiber is a special group of carbohydrates. It is excellent for your health.
Q: Where can we find fiber?
A: Not in milk, meat, or eggs, but only in foods that are grow from the ground: cereals like rice and corn, for example, and vegetables and fruit. You get lots of fiber from meals that include beans, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, vegetables and wholewheat bread.
