IV. Reading: The Elves and the Shoemaker by The Grimm Brothers (adapted)
There was once a shoemaker who worked very hard and was very honest, but still he could not earn enough money to survive and all he had in the world was just some leather to make one more pair of shoes. He cut his leather out and left it all ready to be made into shoes the next day.
In the morning, he was about to start his work when, to his great surprise, there were the shoes already made, on the table. The good man did not know what to say or think.
The same day a customer came in and paid a price higher than usual for them. The poor shoemaker bought enough leather to make two more pairs. In the evening he cut out the work and went to bed early.
When he got up in the morning all the work was done. Soon buyers came in and paid good money for the shoes. The man bought enough leather for four more pairs, cut out the work again overnight and found it done in the morning as before and so it went on for some time.
On Christmas eve, the shoemaker told his wife "I should like to sit up and watch tonight because we may see who it is that comes and does my work for me". So, they hid themselves in a corner of the room, behind a curtain to watch what would happen.
At midnight there came in two little dwarfs who sat on the shoemaker’s chair, took what was cut out and began to work with their little fingers, stitching and rapping at such a rate, that the shoemaker could not take his eyes off them. And on they went until the job was done and the shoes were ready for use on the table. This was long before daybreak; and then they disappeared as quick as lightning. The next day the wife told the shoemaker "These little elves have made us rich and we ought to be thankful to them. I felt bad to see them wearing poor clothes lo keep off the cold. I'll make each of them a shirt, a coat, and a pair of pants: and your make each of them all shoes, and you'll make each of them a little pair of shoes". One evening, when all the things were ready, they laid them on the table and then hid themselves to watch what the little ones would do. About midnight came in and went to sit down to their work as usual, but when they saw the clothes lying for them, they laughed and looked very happy. They dressed themselves and danced until it was time for them to go away.
The good couple never saw them again, but everything went well with them from that time on, as long as they lived.
