Brazil is a country as big as a continent and it is called the land of superlative. It
is the biggest and most populous country in Latin America, home to the
Amazon, the largest hydrographic basin in the world and the most extensive
river network. Rio is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. São Paulo is
one of the largest. But Brazil can also be called the land of contrasts. It
occupies, simultaneously, a place among the best and the worst of worlds. It is
the 15' largest economy, just behind Canada and Spain, but most Brazilians are
very poor. It has some of the best universities in Latin America, but sixteen per
cent of its adult population cannot read or write. Brazil society is unequal and
unjust but in Brazil political liberties are secure. A wide-open space for criticism
and debate is gradually creating a general awareness of human rights and other important issues. This is
perhaps one of the most favorable moments in Brazil's republican history for winning the war on poverty,
injustice and impunity.
