Reading Strategies
Some people read because they need information, others read for pleasure. Information seekers are in a hurry: they
have to go through the text rapidly to find what they need. Pleasure readers, on the other hand, take their time; every page is
a new pleasure, an adventure, and information is the mere consequence of a greater experience.
Should you be one type of reader or the other? Actually, you should be both. There are times when you can relax and
enjoy your reading while at other times you have to skim rapidly through a lot of material to perform a task.
To become a good reader, you should develop reading strategies. Reading is made up of many kinds of details. You
ought to find your own way of reading: the way that works best for you. There are some reading skills that may help you in
this process. In the beginning, you need to use them in a conscious effort. Then, you need not think of them: they will just be
there, helping you.
Scanning: to scan is to look at a text searching for specific, immediate information. You should always look at the
images, type of publication, name of the author, source of the text, the words, etc. The more information you gather before
reading the text, the better you will understand it.
Skimming: to skim a text is to make a fast, non-stop reading to have a general idea of the text. It is like when you get
a newspaper and just go over the news before stopping at something that really interests you.
Predicting: to predict is to try to guess what the text will say before you actually read it. If you try to predict (usually
based on your scanning and your skimming of the text), reading the text will be more meaningful to you, and you will be able
to learn details.
All Strategies involve techniques. For example, guessing the meaning of a word by analyzing the sentence, or asking
information questions for each sentence in the text. You must make an effort to use strategies and techniques to be a good
