Heliópolis is one of the poorest parts of São Paulo, Brazil. Life can be difficult for

people there and in 1996, there was a big fire that destroyed many homes in the area.

Families lost everything they owned. A famous Brazilian composer named Silvio

Baccarelli was watching a TV report about the destruction in Heliópolis. He decided that

he wanted to help people there with music. He used his own money to start a music

school called The Baccarelli Institute for the people of Heliópolis and other poor areas.

The institute gives young people the chance to learn how to play musical instruments.

They practice in orchestras and small groups. There are also singing teachers, and

students sing in choirs. The institute started with a group of 35 students from a local

school. Now it has grown and there are about 1,200 young people between the ages of

13 and 25 studying there.
