Helen Sharman, the first British woman astronaut, went into space on May 12, 1991. She
had to prepare carefully before she left. She had to learn Russian for eight hours every day for
three months. She also had to be extremely fit so she needed to do a lot of physical exercises.
Then she had to learn to navigate using the stars. Obviously she didn't have to fly the
spacecraft herself but she had to learn how to control it in emergencies. Another thing which
was crucial for her was to accustom herself to a feeling of weightlessness, without gravity. To
do this, she had to spin around on a large wheel until she felt Ill.
Twenty-four hours before she left Earth, she had to pass a strict medical examination. A
common cold can cause serlous breathing problems in space.
