Text: Healthy Problems: Is It Flu or Dengue?

Jane (OHIO): Hi Dr. Morgan, I´m studying to be a nurse and I have an important

question. How is it possible to know if a person has flu or dengue? The symptoms are

very similar and it is difficult to see the difference. Can I use the same treatment for both

cases?

Doctor: Well Jane, this is an important question. Flu and Dengue fever really have

similar symptoms but they are different diseases. Flu symptoms include: fever over 102

F: stuffy nose; nausea; chills and sweats; fatigue; muscle aches; especially in your back,

arms and legs; cough; headache and loss of appetite. Dengue fever usually presents

symptoms like: fever; severe pain behind the eye, muscle and joint pain, rash, nausea,

vomiting and loss of appetite etc.

In case of Dengue diagnosis, it is important that the patient rests, drinks a lot of

fluids and doesn´t take aspirin, In both cases the patient has to see a doctor to get the

right diagnosis and treatment. Don´t take any medication without a doctor prescription.
