The culture of Russia, rooted in the early Eastern Slavs, is the product of a multiethnic society, though dominated by the Russian language and by the Russian people, who constitute the majority of the population. Various ethnic groups in Russia have distinct traditions of traditional music. Typical ethnic musical instruments of the country are gusli, balalaika, zhaleika and garmoshka. Popular music has had a great influence on Russian classical composers and in modern times is a source of inspiration for a number of popular folk bands including Melnitsa.

Ancient Russian folklore has its roots in the Slavic pagan religion. Many Russian fairy tales and epic Bylinas were adapted for films by prominent directors such as Aleksandr Ptushko and Aleksandr Rou. Russian poets, including Pyotr Yershov and Leonid Filatov, have made a number of well-known poetic interpretations of the classic fairy tales. Russians have many traditions, including washing in banya, a steam bath similar to the sauna.
