Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature which, in turn, causes changes in climate. When scientists talk about climate change, there is, for the most part, a scientific consensus that human action is causing a warming of the carth. For centuries we've been clearing forests and burning coal, oil and gas, pouring carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere faster than plants and oceans can suck them up. Scientists don't know for sure what global warming will bring but they are able to forecast. If climatic trends continue unabated, global warming will threaten our cities, our farms and forests, beaches and wetlands and other natural habitats. The impact on health will be immediate with its most direct effect in the tropics. In Africa, for example, where a form of sleeping sickness is currently confined to the inner part of the continent, its carrier (the tsetse fly) would go southwards. Unless we are able to prevent it, there may be severe consequences for humans and cattle. Many infections and parasitic diseases spread by insects, snails and ticks would become more widespread, taking with them yellow fever, malaria and many other diseases. In those areas where evaporation increases more than precipitation, drought will take place: soil will become drier, rivers will carry less water, and lake levels will drop. Drought will also increase the risk of malnutrition. The consequence is higher chances for getting tuberculosis, leprosy and polio. Water shortage will cause a deterioration in hygiene and public health. Poorer sanitation and contaminated water can spread cholera, typhus and other diseases.
