The History of the Sundae

The origin of the term is controversial. Several American cities claim to be the birthplace of the real ice cream sundae. These cities include: Ithaca, New York; Two Rivers, Plainfield, Evanston, New Orleans, Cleveland and Buffalo.

More recently, the cities of Two Rivers and Ithaca have used the controversy to attract publicity in favor of local tourism.

Of the many stories of invention of the sundae, the most common is the condemnation by the Protestant consumer community on Sundays (Sunday) of ice cream soda and hence the preparation of a popular substitute for consumption on this day.
