  This Irish myth tells the story of Jack the Miserable, who invited the devil to have a drink and did not want to pay the bill. Jack then asked for the devil to turn into a coin. Having transformed, Jack took the coin and put it in his pocket next to a silver cross, preventing the devil from returning to his normal form. The Wretch said he would release him on condition he did not bother Jack for a year and that when he died the devil would not keep his soul.

   The next year, Jack deceived the devil again when he asked him to climb a tree to get some fruit. With the devil already at the top, Jack carved a cross on the trunk and said he would only let him down if this time he promised not to disturb him for ten years.

   A short time later Jack died. Being a miserable figure, God did not allow him to enter the sacred realm. The devil kept his promise: he did not have Jack's soul. Instead, it made him wander forever through the limb with just a coal burning to light his way. Jack put the burning inside a turnip carved to preserve the flame and has wandered to Earth.
