GOODBYE, NIGHT SNACKS!
"...Mom,I'm starving. Can I have that bag of potato chips?"
"...But darling, it's almost midnight. If you eat now, you can't go to bed before two o'clock, you know."
That dialogue may seem stranger, but according to Dr. Keith Taylog, a teacher at Stanford University Medical Center, Mother is absolutely right. "I agree that a late night snack is a delicious way to end the day, but it can be dangerous to you health if you do it regularly.
People who repeatedly go to bed and fall asleep too soon after eating could be asking for complications, because that habit can cause excess acid produced in the stomach. How can you avoid the problem? Dr. Taylog says that when you eat late at night you may go to bed only two hours after that, because digestion takes a longer time during sleep.
"If you go to sleep soon after eating, your stomach produces acid wich normally it would not produce. Some of the acid will enter the lower end of the esophagus, if you are lying down, and that may produce irritation. It might even cause a ulcer, says the doctor.
Dr. Taylog may be right, but it is hard to break a old habit, especially a delicious one. Can you do it?
