O "Did" ou "Didn't no negativo ou interrogativo já carrega a ideia de passado então o verbo não precisa estar no passado. No afirmativo não há eles, precisando então do verbo no passado. A maioria dos verbos regulares termina em ED no passado, os irregulares como SING-SANG ou WRITE-WROTE, não.
