VERBOS MODAIS
1. CAN- poder
Pode expressar:
a) capacidade/ habilidade - She can walk for more than nine hours
They can speak four languages.
b) possibilidade - We can arrive late to class.
c) permissão informal – Can I talk to you now? / I can go out early.
Obs; O modal “can” pode ser substituído por “be able to” (ser capaz de/poder). Este, no
entanto, é conjugado da seguinte forma:
I am able to ...
You are able to ...
He is able to ...
She is able to ...
It is able to ...
We are able to ...
You are able to ...
They are able to ...
2. COULD - poder ( no tempo passado: pôde/ podia / poderia)
a) expressa uma habilidade ou capacidade no passado.
They could walk for more than nine hours when they were twenty (years old).
b) expressa uma permissão formal
Could the students talk to you?

3. MAY – Poder
Pode expressar:
a) possibilidade forte
It may rain today night.
b) permissão formal
She may talk to the director.
4. MIGHT – poder (no tempo passado)
a) Possibilidade remota/fraca
It might rain today night.
b) permissão mais formal que may
She might talk to the director
5. MUST – DEVER
Pode expressar:
a) uma dedução lógica
His car is not in the garage. He must be out.
b) uma obrigação moral forte
That man is very sick. He must see a doctor.
6. HAVE TO - DEVER
Pode expressar:
a) um fato o qual subjaz uma ordem maior ou uma lei
The light is red. You have to stop your car.

7. MUSTN’T
Expressa uma proibição
It is a secret you mustn’t talk to anyone about it

8. DOESN’T ou DON’T HAVE TO
Expressa uma falta de necessidade
Tomorrow will be a holiday, so the students don’t have to come to the university.
9. SHOULD – DEVER
Expressa um conselho
You got zero in the exam. You should study hard.

10. OUGHT TO – DEVER
Também expressa um conselho
You got zero in the exam. You ought to study hard.
Obs: should E ought to podem ser usados intercambiavelmente, isto é, eles podem ser
substituídos um pelo outro sem alteração do sentido da frase. Veja os exemplos dos itens 9
e 10.
11. NEEDN’T
Expressa falta de necessidade.
Seu emprego é semelhante ao DON’T HAVE TO (usado para I, You, We e They) ou
DOESN’T HAVE TO ( usado para He, She e It).
Tomorrow will be a holiday, so the students needn’t come to the university.
OBS: Don’t have to / Doesn’t have to ou Needn’t também podem ser usados
intercambiavelmente.
