Diferenças do Simple Past e Past Perfect:

O Simple Past é um tempo verbal usado em inglês para expressar ações que iniciaram e finalizaram no passado, sem qualquer conexão com o presente. Já o Past Perfect, apesar de também expressar uma ação no passado, impõe uma relação entre dois tempos no passado.

Quando usamos o Past Perfect, queremos indicar uma ação que aconteceu antes de uma outra específica no tempo passado. Fazendo a equivalência com o português, seria o tempo gramatical Mais-que-perfeito composto. Por exemplo, na frase "After he had worked at the hospital for two years he decided to give up the job", a ação de ter trabalhado no hospital por dois anos aconteceu antes da pessoa desistir do emprego.
