       This was what happened during the Le Mans 24-hour race in France in 1955. Mercedes-Benz driver Pierre Levegh was 240 km / h when he tried to overtake Austin-Healy's Lance Macklin. Levegh's car overturned and flew into the stands, exploding soon after.

       The driver died on the spot and the wreckage hit the spectators, killing 84 and injuring more than 70. After the tragedy, Mercedes withdrew from motorsport and only returned in the 1980s.

        The accident with more cars involved happened in Brazil, on the Imigrantes highway, in 2011. About 300 cars were involved in the largest pile-up in history - which left one person dead and more than 50 injured.
