“Inside Out” is about how five emotions — personified as the characters Anger, Disgust, Fear, Sadness and Joy — grapple for control of the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley during the tumult of a move from Minnesota to San Francisco. The message of the movie is that we require all of our emotions: not just the so-called positive ones. We soon realise that Joy's tendency to ignore and suppress Sadness is actually getting in the way of them finding their way home. By the end of the film, Riley learns that all emotions play an important role in creating who we are, and even negative emotions like “Sadness” are crucial to being a fully functional and healthy human being.
