DO YOU KNOW WHAT “GENERATION Z” MEANS?

I’m a father of two teenagers and I’ve been very worried about my sons. Psychologists say that, today, most adolescents belong to a generation called “generation z” – the multitasking generation. I’ve looked the expression up and according to an encyclopedia, “multitasking is the performance or ability to handle more than one task at the same time”. For example, multitasking is listening to a radio program while typing an e-mail, which would make me really irritated.

Doing several things at the same time can sound productive. But, what really worries me is that some researchers believe that, when we switch rapidly between tasks, it can actually slow us down.

I know it’s a generation where teenagers are gadget-obsessed: Internet, iPods, iPhones, virtual games, etc. However, although modern technology allows them to perform more tasks at the same time, psychologists claim that juggling these tasks can make their brains lose connections to important information.

Every morning, my sixteen-year-old son begins writing an essay or doing his English homework while his laptop or e-mail is loading.

My other son, who is fourteen, does his homework while listening to music and answering his e-mails. All at the same time! He says it helps him concentrate! How come it’s not disturbing?

When I complain, their teachers say that so far things don’t sound too bad. “Just two kids doing what kids have always done – adding some entertainment to their busy lives and managing their busy schedules to their abilities.”

Who is right? Who should I believe? Tell me.
