Bacteria have both DNA and RNA as their genetic material. The DNA in bacteria, just like eukaryotes is stored in form of a chromosomal structure along with associated proteins and RNA, but as a circular double-stranded structure, unlike the other organisms. This structure is enclosed in an irregular structure known as the nucleoid. Apart from this, the bacterial DNA is also available in the form of relatively short and circular segments of DNA that code for genes required for survival of the cell. These short segments, known as plasmids can be transferred between bacterial cells
