O verbo to be é o verbo "ser". Ele é representado por "am", "is" e "are". O "am" é unicamente utilizado junto do pronome "I" (eu); o "is" é utilizado para os pronomes "he" (ele), "she" (ela) e "it" (ele/ela/coisa); e o "are" com todos os outros — you (você), we (nós), they (eles), you (vocês).

As abreviações são chamadas de "contrações". Exemplos: "I am" vira "I'm", "You are" vira "You're", "She is" vira "She's". Já as contrações negativas do verbo to be se formam da seguinte maneira: quando "is" e "are" são contraídos com "not", eles viram "ISN'T" (is not) e "AREN'T" (are not). Já o "am" é um pouco diferente, quando junto de "not", a contração fica "I am not".

Então:

Carrie: Sorry. (1) AM I late?

Josh: No, you (2) AREN'T. You (3) ARE fine.

Carrie: Good. So, what’s new? (4) ARE you busy at work?

Josh: Yes, I (5) AM. Our boss (6) IS sick, so, he (7) ISN'T at work.

Carrie: Oh, really?

Josh: So how about you? What (8) ARE your new neighbors like? (9) ARE they nice? Carrie: Yes, They (10) ARE. They (11) ARE OK. They (12) ARE very quiet.

Josh: (13) ARE they students?

Carrie: No, they (14) AREN'T. The guy (15) IS a writer.

Josh: A writer? What about the woman? (16) IS she a writer too?

Carrie: No, she (17) ISN'T. She (18) IS NOT a writer. She (19) IS a teacher. At our school!!!
